1. Introduction
The Centre for Geopolitics & Economic Intelligence (CGEI) is committed to protecting privacy and explaining how cookies and similar technologies are used on geoeconcentre.org, the Partner Portal and related digital services. References to “CGEI”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the Centre for Geopolitics & Economic Intelligence. The Policy explains what cookies are, how CGEI uses them and the choices available to visitors and Portal users. It should be read with CGEI’s Privacy Policy. Essential cookies may be used without consent where the law permits because they are required to provide, protect or secure a function requested by the user. A cookie that requires consent will not be placed until the user has made an affirmative choice.
2. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website stores on a computer, tablet, smartphone or other device. They allow a website to recognise a browser, maintain a secure session, remember a choice or perform another stated function. Similar technologies that store information on a device or gain access to information on it are covered by this Policy where applicable.
Cookies may be classified as follows:
- First-party cookies are placed by CGEI through the website or Partner Portal.
- Third-party cookies are placed through a service supplied by another organisation and integrated into the website.
- Session cookies are temporary and usually expire when the browser is closed or the session ends.
- Persistent cookies remain on the device until their stated expiry date or until they are deleted.
3. How We Use Cookies
CGEI uses cookies only for stated purposes and applies the requirements that govern each purpose.
3.1 Essential Cookies
Essential cookies support functions required for the website and Partner Portal to operate securely. They may maintain a user session, protect forms against misuse, authenticate an authorised user, preserve a requested Portal state, route a request or help prevent fraud and unauthorised access. Without these cookies, secure forms, sign in functions or Portal services may not operate correctly. Where an essential cookie is strictly necessary to provide a function requested by the user or to transmit a communication, CGEI may place it without consent. CGEI limits its use to the necessary purpose.
3.2 Performance and Analytics Cookies
CGEI does not currently use performance or analytics cookies. If CGEI introduces them, it will provide the required information and obtain consent unless the cookie satisfies an applicable legal exception, including any conditions concerning aggregate statistics, confidentiality and a simple means of objecting.
3.3 Functional Cookies
Functional cookies may remember a choice such as language, display settings or cookie preferences. CGEI will seek consent where required. A cookie used solely to record and respect a privacy choice may be treated as essential for that purpose.
3.4 Advertising and Targeting Cookies
CGEI does not currently use advertising or targeting cookies and does not use cookies to follow visitors across unrelated websites for behavioural advertising. If this practice changes, CGEI will update this Policy and obtain consent before placing any cookie that requires it.
4. Third-Party Cookies
CGEI may make content or services supplied by another organisation available through the website. If that service would place a third-party cookie, CGEI will identify the provider and purpose, explain the choice and obtain consent where required before the cookie is placed. A link to an external website does not itself mean that the external operator places a cookie through CGEI’s website. Once a user follows an external link, the external operator may use cookies under its own terms and policies. CGEI does not control cookies placed on an external website.
5. Managing Your Cookie Preferences
Where Cookie Settings are available on the website, users may use them to accept, reject or change choices for cookies that are not exempt from consent. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of use that occurred before withdrawal, but it prevents the relevant cookies from being used in the future unless another legal exception applies. Browser controls may also block or delete cookies. The method varies by browser and device, so users should consult the relevant help pages. Blocking essential cookies may prevent secure forms, sign in functions and parts of the Partner Portal from working.
6. How Long Cookies Remain
A session cookie normally expires when the browser is closed or the session ends. A persistent cookie remains only for the period stated in the relevant Cookie Settings or cookie information, unless the user deletes it sooner. CGEI keeps each duration proportionate to the cookie’s purpose and reviews retained cookies periodically.
7. Changes to This Policy
CGEI may update this Policy to reflect changes in law, regulatory guidance, technology or the cookies used through its digital services. The revised Policy will be published on the website with a new effective date. A material change affecting consent will be presented to users before the relevant cookie is placed.
8. Contact Us
Questions about this Cookie Policy or CGEI’s use of cookies may be sent to webmaster@geoeconcentre.org. Questions concerning personal data should be submitted using the contact details in CGEI’s Privacy Policy.
