Participation Guidelines

The Participation Guidelines set the standards governing contributions and moderation within CGEI Global Communities.

Purpose

Global Communities exists for conversations on geopolitical and economic themes selected by the Centre for Geopolitics & Economic Intelligence. Participation is open to registered account holders who observe the standards below. CGEI moderates conduct and integrity, not viewpoint.

Stay with the theme

Contributions and replies must address the theme of discussion. A contribution may challenge the premise of a theme, but it must remain relevant to the issue under discussion. Repeated attempts to divert a discussion may be removed.

Argue the position, not the person

Opposing views are permitted. Personal attacks, harassment, threats, discriminatory abuse, intimidation or degrading language directed at another participant are not.

Make a genuine contribution

Primary contributions should advance an argument, interpretation, evidence or informed perspective. Repetition, flooding, coordinated disruption and low-value posting are prohibited.

Use evidence responsibly

Participants may cite public sources, reports, datasets, official documents, academic literature and news material. Fabricated sources, falsified quotations, manipulated evidence or materially deceptive presentation are prohibited. Where a factual claim is challenged, participants should be prepared to identify the basis for it.

No promotion

Global Communities is not a marketing, recruitment or fundraising channel. Advertising, sales pitches, client solicitation, promotional descriptions of a participant’s organisation or service, affiliate or referral links, recruitment advertisements, fundraising appeals and commercial calls to action are prohibited. References to companies, institutions, products or services remain permissible when they are relevant evidence within the discussion.

Identity and impersonation

Do not impersonate another person, organisation or CGEI. The name used on a participant account must be consistent with a government-issued identity document. CGEI may request identity verification where necessary to protect the integrity of Global Communities.

Contribution limits

Primary contributions are limited to 500 words and may contain one graphic no larger than 50 KB. Replies are limited to 200 words and cannot contain graphics.

Graphics

Graphics must support the argument being made. Advertising graphics, promotional banners, manipulated graphics presented deceptively, or material that infringes another person’s rights are prohibited. Participants are responsible for having the right to upload any graphic they submit.

Automated submission controls

The submission control may be disabled when the system detects promotional or marketing content, an excessive word count, an invalid graphic or another submission rule. A participant who believes compliant content has been blocked may request review.

Reporting

Use Report only for a genuine concern about a contribution or reply. Reporting a position merely because you disagree with it is not an appropriate use of the reporting function. Repeated misuse of reporting may itself result in restriction.

Moderation

CGEI may allow, hold, return for revision, hide, remove or lock content and may restrict, suspend or end participation where these Guidelines are breached. Serious abuse, impersonation, deliberate manipulation, repeated promotion or attempts to evade controls may lead to immediate action.

Review of a moderation decision

A participant may request review of a moderation decision affecting their content or account. Where practicable, the review will be undertaken by a different authorised moderator or administrator.

Responsibility and endorsement

Participants are responsible for their own contributions. Publication within Global Communities does not constitute endorsement by CGEI.

Changes to the Guidelines

CGEI may amend these Guidelines where necessary to protect the integrity, security or lawful operation of Global Communities. Material changes will be reflected in the version shown within participant accounts.
